What are Impacted Wisdom Teeth?

At some point, everyone has to deal with their wisdom teeth. For some people, they will live out their entire adult lives with no problems with their wisdom teeth because they have enough room on their gum line for the wisdom teeth to emerge or breakthrough. For most people, however, that is not the case. When there isn’t enough room for your wisdom tooth to erupt through the gumline, this usually means they are lodged in your jawbone. The pain and discomfort you feel is what is known as an impacted wisdom tooth.

Signs of an Impacted Wisdom Tooth

While most people will not see any real signs of the impacted wisdom tooth emerging, what you are able to see will still definitely hurt. Below is a list of some of the signs:

  • Jaw Pain:
  • Pain in the back of your jaw is a common indicator of impacted wisdom teeth. The pain often concentrates in the area around your gums.

  • Changes in the Mouth:
  • You may notice some changes in your mouth when you have impacted wisdom teeth. Reddish gums, swelling in the jaw, bleeding gums, and bad breath can all be indicators that you are dealing with impacted wisdom teeth.

  • Headaches:
  • If you suddenly start having headaches, especially at the same time as some of the other issues mentioned above, they may indicate impacted wisdom teeth.

  • Chewing Issues:
  • Problems with chewing normally can indicate impacted wisdom teeth. If you are having trouble making the chewing motions because your mouth won’t quite open and close as easily as it used to, impacted wisdom teeth may be the culprit.

How to Fix it

If you are actually suffering from an impacted wisdom tooth, the best way to fix it is usually extraction (removal) of the wisdom tooth. Impacted wisdom teeth will not resolve themselves naturally. In fact, if not addressed the pain and problems can worsen such as infection, inflammation, and even worse pain.
