Why Do I Need to Come in for an Exam?

Dental cleanings and exams are one of the most effective ways to prevent cavities and other dental diseases. By regularly visiting with our dentist, our office is able to catch early signs of disease, inflammation, infection or tooth decay.

When Should I Come in for a Cleaning?

The ADA recommends planning an exam twice a year every six months. However, additional visits may be necessary to help address other factors, such as genetic susceptibility, ongoing disease, infection or other dental issues.

What Happens During the Exam?

During a check-up, our dentist will provide a dental cleaning. Dental cleanings remove bacteria deposits on the surface of the teeth, as well as any plaque, tarter or calculus that has built up since your last appointment. Our dentist will also be on the lookout for signs of cavities or periodontal (gum) disease. We may also use X-rays to get a closer, more detailed look at your mouth. Depending on your personal health history, as well as your current hygiene habits, we may recommend both in-office treatments and at-home changes.

How Do I Prepare for My Visit?

To prepare for your appointment, we recommend developing good at-home habits. Two ways you can keep your teeth healthy are by brushing and flossing regularly. Brushing twice a day and flossing at least once a day help remove food debris and bacteria from the surface of and in between teeth. Be upfront with your habits and let our dentist know about any changes you notice in your dental or oral health. Be prepared to share personal information such as your insurance coverage or medical history.
