A complete denture can be either “conventional” or “immediate.” A conventional type is made after the teeth have been removed and the gum tissue has healed (usually takes 4 to 6 weeks). During this time, the patient will go without teeth. Immediate dentures are made in advance and immediately placed after the teeth are removed, thus preventing the patient from having to be without teeth during the healing process. Once the tissues shrink and heal, adjustments will have to be made.
Dentures are very durable appliances and will last many years but may have to be remade, repaired, or readjusted due to normal wear.
Reasons for dentures:
Complete Denture - Loss of all teeth in an arch.
Partial Denture - Loss of several teeth in an arch.
Enhancing smile and facial tissues.
Improving chewing, speech, and digestion.
What does getting dentures involve?
The process of getting dentures requires several appointments, usually over a period of several weeks. Highly accurate impressions (molds) and measurements are taken and used to create your custom denture. Several “try-in” appointments may be necessary to ensure proper shape, color, and fit. At the final appointment, your dentist will precisely adjust and place the completed denture, ensuring a natural and comfortable fit.
It is normal to experience increased saliva flow, some soreness, and possible speech and chewing difficulty, however this will subside as your muscles and tissues get used to the new dentures.
You will be given care instructions for your new dentures. Proper cleaning of your new dental appliance, good oral hygiene, and regular dental visits will aid in the life of your new dentures.
Traditional Full Dentures
Traditional dentures stay in place through a combination of dental adhesive and the natural suction provided by the roof of the mouth. As the most affordable full prosthetic, traditional dentures allow patients to regain some bite function, and the appearance of a complete and healthy smile. When coming in for your denture appointment, Dr. Singh will remove any failing teeth and take an impression of your bite to ensure an ideal fit. Patients will then return to our office for a try-in appointment where final adjustments will be made, so they can enjoy their newly completed smiles.
Metal Framed Partial Dentures
If patients are missing many, but not all the teeth in an arch, our Killeen denture provider offers metal-framed partial dentures. Partials are made using a cobalt-chrome support system which is resistant to wear, ensuring stability when worn. As with traditional dentures, partials are fabricated to fit your unique bite and are matched to the appearance of the remaining healthy teeth.
Implant-supported dentures are the ideal restoration for patients who are missing most or all of their teeth in a dental arch. Implant posts are placed into jaw bone, creating a foundation for the restorations to be placed. These posts prevent bone loss through resorption and support long-term oral health.
Retained dentures also support chewing fibrous foods such as chicken and steak, which are difficult to consume with removable dentures. The additional reinforcement of dental implants allows patients to return to their regular diets, without having to worry about embarrassing slips. Partial dentures are also ideally placed on dental implants, as they do not need to be affixed to the remaining healthy teeth to be held in place.
